2023 Composition Competition (Application Closed)

The Sydney Concert Orchestra is looking to promote new works and compositions. We are delighted to announce an opportunity for young Australian composers to perform their works. Our mission is to create opportunites for emerging composers to develop their compositional skills while offering a platform to have their works performed.


This competition will be offering five shortlist composers extensive feedback and critique from each member of panel, with up to two finalists given the opportunity to have their works performed by the Sydney Concert Orchestra on the 22nd April 2023.


Important Dates:

Application Deadline: 15th March 2023

Shortlist Annoucement: 24th - 27th March 2023

Concert Date (Finalist Performance): 22nd April 2023


General Guidelines:

  • Applicants must be under 30 years old, and living in Australia.

  • All applicants must pay application fee of $25.

  • We encourage composers from ethnically diverse background, current and graduate composition students to participate.

  • Compositions must be original and not been performed prior to 22nd April 2023.

  • Total duration of work must not exceed 12 minutes.

  • Compositions must not exceed instrumentation guidelines, any works which fail to follow instrumentation guidelines will be disqualified.

  • All works must be complete, no single movement of multi movement work will be accepted.

  • Works must not include electro-acoustic elements or amplified piano.

  • Composers are highly encouraged to attend rehearsals scheduled to workshop the composition (dates will be notified to finalist/s).

  • All works must be well formatted, any poorly formatted works will be disqualified.

  • Finalists must agree to provide well formatted parts to guarantee a performance.

  • Any late submission will be disregarded.


Instrumentation:

  • Strings - [8.8.6.6.2]

  • Woodwinds - [2 (Flute 2 may double piccolo).2.2.2]

  • Brass - [4.2.3 (1 x Tenor, 1 x Alto, 1 x Bass).1]

  • Percussion - Timpani (Up to 3 pitched)

  • *Additional percussion may be requested by finalists if required*

 

How To Apply (Application Closed):


The application form will require the following:

  • Personal details

  • Reason for application

  • .PDF file of full composition score (multi movement works must be submitted in one file).

  • .MP3/.WAV file of composition (may be midi/sibelius playback or live recording).

  • Application fee of $25.

Notes:

  • Submissions do NOT have to be anonymous (if anonymous, applicant will be contacted via Email if shortlisted or finalist).

  • No payment of application fee will result in disqualification.

  • Put your full submission name as billing name for payment.

  • Composers may submit a maximum of two (2) submissions, but must do in separate form submissions.

  • No third-party submission sites (e.g. Dropbox) will be accepted.

  • No individual feedback will be given (except shortlisted and finalists applicants).

  • Any details regarding competition may be subjected to change without notice.
